“Auto-immune” or just "Immune" Disease?

Classic allergies such as peanut are immediate and can be severe or life-threatening; however, they are usually simple to document with skin testing or blood tests. With many other persistent symptoms, finding the trigger(s) requires a more in-depth analysis and is more complex than suppressing the symptom with long-term medications. A hallmark of the immune system involvement is a multitude of symptoms. These often seem unrelated but are in fact random expressions of the same upregulated immune system. T-(helper) cells are known to be our early-warning system and the "buffer" between our body and our environment. The notion that the immune system is attacking its owner is, at best, incomprehensible and, at worst, misleading: the immune system has evolved to warn us against external factors such as toxins, infections, what we eat and what we breathe. Epigenetic changes in a person's DNA, sub-optimal nutrition, poor cell and liver detoxification, and under-performing mitochondria (the energy units in the cell) make the person susceptible to ill health. At The Burghwood Clinic, we are totally focused on identifying and treating the "cause", not the symptom. In this context, we believe that the term "auto-immune" disease defies logic: The immune system does not attack its owner unless it is overwhelmed by external factors.
